Finally got around to making a new set of klink boards and they came in handy as always. I tried using a shredded old mold for filler for the first time. Next time I will definitely shred it finer.
Set up for the foam replica demo I’m running at HorrorFind Weekend this Saturday.

Using:
Smooth-On Oomoo 30
Non-sulfur plastilina (more than you think)
And yes, that’s a drumstick.

I will be running a casting and mold making seminar at HorrorFind Weekend (September 3-5 2010) in Gettysburg, PA. It will be either Saturday or Sunday, I don’t have the finalized schedule yet but I will post details as soon as they become available.
Title: Casting and Mold making 101
Description: Join Ahren of SteamGearLab.com as he brings you on a magical journey* through the world of casting and mold making. This seminar will cover materials available for making molds, use of sealers and release agents, proper mix and pour techniques and a demonstration of one and two part molds for reproducing parts and decorative pieces in resin and foam. All skill levels are welcome! We will cover all the basics but feel free to come with project specific questions. Also, feel free to send an email to ahren at steamgearlab.com in advance with more complex issues (related to casting and mold making) and we will try and incorporate them if possible.
*Magical journey not guaranteed
This is HorrorFind Weekend’s 12th(!) year. They have an AMAZING guest lineup and a tremendous support staff. Hope to see you there!

Pics from a casting and moldmaking seminar that I presented at GameX 2009 in Pennsylvania. The good folks at Smooth-On were kind enough to send not only a representative (the indefatigable Adam) but also a boatload of promo and demo material.
In addition to casting and moldmaking, there were sessions on Steampunk 101, prop making, paint application and antique photography demonstrations from Tsirkus Fotografika.
Crackitus Potts from the League of S.T.E.A.M. joined along with a local airship crew and and they were a huge help. Embarrassing pictures have been retracted.
Some coverage here, here and here.

Small doll made by Rebecca and me during a mad night of crafting. It’s stuffed with cat fur because we didn’t have any batting. It is one of the silliest and most disgusting things I have ever made.
Materials:
Fabric scraps
Old buttons
Cat hair (brushed not murdered)

Fable: Teeth of Beasts trailer – http://youtu.be/5i7WM9vTaok and preorder – http://amzn.to/bSkpbf
Don’t be thrown off by the title on the pics, it was a working name at the time the props were being produced.
All these items are 100% practical.

COILHOUSE MAGAZINE #5
Steampunk art book participant Jessica Joslin:
96 Tears
Chris Conn Askew
Jessica Joslin interviews the mysterious, meticulous Mister Chris Conn Askew– an artist who creates modern day fables for romantics and aesthetes, as densely layered in symbolism as dreams, and as inscrutable as love.
I have the issue and it is (as always) AMAZING. No need to blow smoke here. Coilhouse always delivers the new hotness.
Update: It appears to be sold out on the website
I know there’s one copy at the Barnes & Noble in Glastonbury, CT…
